Bryson Tiller and his “elegant” rap
On the occasion of Bryson Tiller‘s sophomore album release, the artist passed by Milan, the only Italian date of the “Set it off” tour. The opening act is IAMDDB, a bubbly singer full of energy from Manchester with a voice to die for. Her energy has awakened the crowd and her enthusiasm has conquered everyone at the Alcatraz. The Mancunian singer’s swag set the stage for Bryson Tiller and her connection with the audience was awesome.
- First part: CHECK !!
Talking a little more about the audience, we can really notice that it is an expert, young and international public. Everyone knows all the songs on their fingertips, from the opening act until the end of the concert, which surprised me a lot. Although Italian rap has been growing for many years, I did not think that US rap could find such a fervent audience in Italy. Well, better, it will perhaps allow other international rap artists to come and perform in our country.
Apart from the vocal performances, the beauty of the concert was the cultural and social factor that made me up with Italy. The social mix was incredible, giving the image of a multicultural and tolerant country, a country that is too often confronted with the reality of racism. Let’s hope that young Italians and the new generation are more intelligent, and that the situation is not yet desperate.
And suddenly, it’s absolute madness, Bryson Tiller comes on stage, with plays of light and a proper introduction from his DJ. Like a real star, he is acclaimed by the crowd. The floor shakes literally under my feet at the Alcatraz and from the first song “Self Made”, the energy is incredible. Drake’s protégé is impeccable both vocally and stylistically. There is something special and unique about Bryson Tiller!
Far from the bling bling stereotypes of some American rappers, he shows a simplicity but also an unfailing efficiency. His stanzas turn into poetry and his rap is no more than an elegant rap.
I personally think his simplicity; his humility and his style have made him a special artist in the urban music landscape.
The stage set is simple but effective exactly like the artist, a very long LED screen projecting colors accompanies the artist throughout the concert and delivers an extra of energy.
Vocally, the artist is as good on melodic notes and RnB rhythms as on his flow and rap. Without being a beast on stage, he still has a great confidence that makes him keep the attention of the crowd and the crowd is captivated by the Man.
At each song, the party gets bigger and bigger, and the crowd goes mad, singing, dancing and celebrating Bryson Tiller’s lyrics. For a few hours, a small piece of the USA has landed in Milan, it’s like being in Philly or Brooklyn, many speak English, and dress codes are very far from the haute couture boutiques of via Monte Napoleone.
Bryson Tiller is a very promising artist, and it does not surprise me that some say he will take over from Kendrick Lamar. A quiet strength, a simplicity that allowed him to make a name for himself in the rap world. What do you think? Do you like Bryson Tiller? Leave your comments …
