Taschen – Art Record Covers
We all have a favorite cover art! And who does not remember the legendary cover of Michael Jackson’s Thriller or Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Moreover, the covers are sometimes even more famous than the tracks of the album itself.
Some covers are real works of art. And great artists have participated on these projects, big names like Andy Warhol, Banksy or even Jeff Koons.
The editions Taschen has released a book entitled “Art record covers”, a superb anthology of album covers. As the book claims, art is not only found in museums. Who knows if you have treasures well hidden inside your house?
“Before the Second World War, records were sold in generic card sleeves that resembled photo albums, and that’s where the album word comes from,” says Francesco Spampinato, a contemporary artist, historian and writer.
For more than 60 years, labels have recruited talented artists and illustrators to create these wonderful covers. A few years after, the licenses were bought in order to use the works of Magritte or Picasso.
New York artists of graffiti culture such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Futura 2000, illustrated the first hip hop albums, in which they often participated in musically.
This beautiful book in vinyl format, therefore, arranged alphabetically the artists and their corresponding works.
