Become a rockstar with the new game Rockopolis!
Today I present you with something unusual but definitely “in the ropes” Music to my Eye #MTME: today I present a game!
Saturday and Sunday I went to Play 2017 in Modena. An important event that has reached the 9th edition with more than 22,000 square meters of floor area devoted to the game business. This year the event presented 1500 games to thousands of fans from all over Italy. A paradise for young and older people.
Shall we? What about a game show with us? Good! This year was presented a game about music that promises very well: ROCKOPOLIS!
Read more I contacted the authors of the game and Andrea d’Azzura and David publisher Minos Games and here’s the interview that I collected:
In my blog, MUSIC TO MY EYE, I connect music to art. Art is how to create something new and interesting, and this is right on withis new game called Rockopolis. Could you introduce yourselves, so we know a little bit more about you guys?!
We are Azzurra and Andrea, partners in life, lawyers, rock singers and fans of RPGs and board games.
Is it your first time conceiving a game or do you have experience in this field?
Azzurra: for me it’s the first time I approached the board game with a special interest in the possible issues to be developed, I like the idea of creating something.
Andrea: for me it is an evolution from beta tester for many strategy games and war games on PC. We have, for several years, worked on variants of games already published, and some games have been successful and been provided as official product from publishers.
What kind of music do you listen to and what are your art and musical influences?
Azzurra: I like rock in all its aspects; for the musical influences I would say Robert Plant and Janis Joplin.
Andrea: I listen to heavy metal and classical music (from baroque to symphonic), my musical influences are varied but I would say Mozart, Wagner, Beatles, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Candlemass.
HOw have yiu chosen the artist who’s done the graphic part of the game? Could you tell us a little bit more about him?
Andrea and Azzurra: For the artwork we wanted something ironic, but not comic; We wanted to provide a grotesque and well characterized features by genres (punk, metal, blues and glam). We followed the work of MONDOCANA (Luca Canapicchi) for years because we were colleagues from the university. Since the first development of the game we combined the images of the game to the unmistakable and original MONDOCANA drawings, we can not imagine Rockopolis without MONDOCANA.
I invite everyone to come and visit the Facebook page of Mondocana clicking here!
How did you get the idea for the game, and why did you choose music for your main theme?
To this can answer Azzurra: We try to share with others the dynamics of the creation and growth (and fall) of a fledgling band. I thought it was a natural synthesis of our personal experiences of the life in a band and Andrea’s experience in the game creation.
Could you explain in a few words the game Rockopolis?
Andrea and Azzurra: The game simulates the creation of an emerging band -blues, metal, punk and glam-; while playing the band leader (operated by the player) will have to try to form the band looking for other characters who want to play with him, buy equipment and make evenings in local clubs to acquire the prestige necessary to be able to be invited into the recording studio to record the demo; the first one who records an album wins. In all this, however, the leader must mediate between different genres, punk and metal, and blues and glam certainly do not love each other.
During the play testing phase, what kind of hardship did you encounter?
The game balance has required much time and attention, in this case it was vital working with the Minos Games editing that has proven to be extremely careful and prepared.
The game has been developed from a light to a light medium where the strategic skills of the players can really make a difference, there are many ways to improve their own band and disadvantage the others. The players have shown a wide variability in the strategies that surprised us and made us happy.
Editor’s note (at the request of the authors): playtest is the essential tool to understand how the game is correct and how it evolves. One of the main difficulties is to understand when it is worth insisting on the path already taken or when it is appropriate to change direction, even if it means giving up some aspects on which we have worked for months.
By the time we improved this capability, we have become faster in making adjustments and corrections.
A last question… Do you also play “Air Guitar”? 🙂
Azzurra: No, I just sing out loud in the car.
Andrea: Yes, even in the car but do not tell anyone.
Good ideas must be encouraged, and if you talk about music, art and entertainment I am always at the forefront !! It is really something new! Yay! Find out about it and contribute to ROCKOPOLIS on Kickstarter from April 4th!!
